The Challenge: Effluent Compliance at a Northern Ontario Pulp Mill

A major pulp and paper facility in Northern Ontario was facing significant challenges in meeting the stringent provincial environmental discharge standards for its effluent. Their existing filtration system was outdated, leading to high levels of suspended solids and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the discharged water. This resulted in non-compliance notices and the looming threat of operational restrictions.

The mill's process water, laden with fine wood fibers, lignin residues, and process chemicals, required a robust separation solution capable of handling high flow rates and variable contaminant loads, all while operating reliably in a harsh industrial environment.

Our Engineered Solution

NettyMarie Industrial Filtration conducted a comprehensive site audit and fluid analysis. The solution centered on a custom-designed, multi-stage filtration train featuring our proprietary DuraMembra™ ceramic membrane modules and high-capacity pre-strainers.

  • Stage 1: Primary Guard: Installation of heavy-duty, automatic self-cleaning strainers to remove large particulates and protect downstream equipment.
  • Stage 2: Core Filtration: A bank of DuraMembra™ cross-flow ceramic membrane filters, selected for their exceptional chemical resistance and ability to handle high-temperature effluent.
  • Stage 3: Polishing & Control: Integrated sensors and a PLC-based control system for automated back-pulsing, chemical cleaning cycles, and real-time monitoring of transmembrane pressure and filtrate quality.

The system was engineered for minimal downtime, with redundant modules allowing for maintenance without halting the entire filtration process.

Implementation & Process

The project was executed in a phased approach over 14 weeks. Our team worked closely with the mill's engineering staff to ensure seamless integration into their existing water treatment loop.

Key phases included foundation preparation, modular skid installation, piping and electrical tie-ins, and comprehensive commissioning. We provided extensive on-site operator training, focusing on system monitoring, routine maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.

Measurable Results & Impact

The new NettyMarie filtration system delivered transformative results, exceeding the mill's compliance targets.

  • 99.7% Reduction in Suspended Solids: Effluent clarity improved dramatically, with solids content consistently below the 15 mg/L regulatory limit.
  • 65% Reduction in COD: The advanced membranes effectively captured dissolved organic compounds, significantly lowering the chemical oxygen demand of the discharged water.
  • Operational Efficiency: Automated cleaning cycles reduced manual labor by approximately 80 hours per month. The system's durability also lowered annual maintenance costs by an estimated 40% compared to the previous setup.
  • Full Regulatory Compliance: The facility has maintained full compliance with Ontario's Environmental Compliance Approval for over 18 months, with zero non-compliance incidents.

Beyond compliance, the project enhanced the mill's sustainability profile and operational reliability, securing its social license to operate within the community.

"The NettyMarie system was a game-changer for our environmental management. It's not just about meeting regulations—it's about operating responsibly and efficiently. Their team's expertise from design through to training was exceptional." – Project Manager, Northern Ontario Pulp Mill
